Three Easy Ways to Regulate Your Emotions

emotional resilience energy work intention mindset self-care Aug 04, 2025

What I’m about to share with you has the power to change your life—not in theory, but in practice. These tools have transformed my life and the lives of thousands I’ve taught this to.

Don’t mistake their simplicity for weakness. Sometimes the most powerful shifts come from the smallest actions.

In today’s world, emotional resilience isn’t a luxury—it’s survival. Emotions run the show. They’re chemical signals moving between your brain and body up to 60,000–70,000 times a day. Most people react to these emotional “instructions” on autopilot, never realizing they have a choice.

One of my biggest focuses when working with leaders and teams is helping them respond to life from a place of calm, clarity, and intuition—not from stress, fear, or overwhelm.

Let me share a recent example that reminded me how critical this is…

The Breakdown

Last week, my family and I made our annual trip to a remote lake in the far eastern corner of North Carolina—a magical place where we unplug, play, and spend our days on the water wake surfing, tubing, and floating under the sun.

This year was no different. We packed the boat, made the eight-hour drive with two excited kids in tow, and pulled into the boat ramp ready to start our adventure.

But the moment I turned the key, the onboard computer screamed at me: System malfunction. Immediate service required.

My heart sank. We were hours from any city, and only a handful of certified technicians in the state could even look at our specialized jet boat. All the excitement I’d been holding turned instantly into frustration, anger, and disappointment.

I spent thirty minutes trying to fix it, emotions boiling hotter with every failed attempt. Nothing worked. I finally gave up and trailered the boat back to the house, my mood spiraling.

Anniston kept reminding me we’d still have an amazing vacation, but my brain was locked on the problem, unable to see solutions. Then, I caught myself. I paused. I took several deep, intentional breaths and gave myself space from the situation.

And just like that, the fog lifted. My thinking shifted from “problem” to “puzzle.” Clarity came. A nudge of intuition led me to check under a hidden panel, where I found a blocked tube causing the whole issue. I cleared it, reassembled everything, and minutes later, the boat roared to life.

The rest of the week? Pure joy on the water.

This experience reminded me of a truth I teach daily:
When emotions run high, your thinking shuts down. Logic, reason, inspiration, intuition—all offline. Regulating your emotions reboots your brain and brings you back to clarity.

Three Simple Tools to Regulate Emotion

Here are three ways you can do this for yourself:

  1. Focus on an Object: Pick up an inanimate object—a pen, a cup—and fix your gaze on it. Breathe slowly and deeply for 1–2 minutes, letting your attention stay on that single thing.
  2. Box Breathing: Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat 4–8 times. This simple rhythm pulls your nervous system out of overdrive fast.
  3. Name It: Out loud or in your head, name the emotion you’re feeling: anger, fear, sadness, stress. This tells your brain you’ve received the message. Within 60 seconds, the chemical surge will start to drop—often by more than 60%.

The hardest part isn’t doing these exercises—it’s remembering to do them in the moment. The next time your emotions spike, pause, pick one of these tools, and try it.

I’d love to hear which one works best for you—hit reply and let me know.

Sending you love and light,
Rudi
